Muslim Minorities Monitor Commends Supreme Court of Appeal’s Judgement to Grant Back the Right to Call for Prayer (Athan) to “Madrasah Ta’leemuddeen” in Isipingo Beach, South Africa

Muslim Minorities Monitor commends South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA)’s judgement which was delivered on 24 Nov. 2022, to set aside the preceding judgement by the High Court of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, which was delivered in August 2020 and decreed to interdict the call for prayer through loudspeakers at “Madrasah Ta’leemuddeen” Islamic Institute in Isipingo Brach, South Africa.

The SCA’s judgement comes to end a two-year long Athan ban at the mosque of the Madrasah and to grant back the right of enjoyment of religious practices to the Muslim minority there, which is guaranteed under the constitution of South Africa.

The Monitor emphasises on the long history of religious harmony between the components of the South African community, which lasted for decades, and that the judgement of the SCA supports this harmony and ensures the guarantee of the basic rights of the Muslim minority of South Africa, which is considered a positive example of a Muslim minority enjoying its rights and coexisting peacefully and harmoniously with its community.
